Alert Bay by Max Peters

Alert Bay is a tiny island lying off the northern coast of Vancouver Island. It is home to the T’sasala Cultural group. We attended a dance ceremony in the Big House to honor the history and teachings of their ancestors the K’wakwala. Max was so taken with the dancing he joined in! They welcomed him to participate in the drumming ceremony. Max’s connection with the T’sasala was just amazing! He painted this afterwards. The fire of the ceremony and the energy of the island is captured vividly in the painting. The center represents Alert Bay as the circle of preservation of the whales and the marine environment of the north. It is a powerful painting. August 2019
